Dr. Elizabeth Vierra is an integral member of the Bernardo Dermatology Medical Group team. The spirit of excellence, kindness and teamwork at BDMG is second to none, and Dr. Vierra loves caring for patients in this exceptional environment.
Dr. Vierra is highly trained in general, surgical, pediatric, and cosmetic dermatology. She feels that the best part of her job is in the development of long-lasting personal relationships with her patients. It is an honor to care for entire families – children, parents, grandparents and great grandparents – over the course of many years. She is amazed at how diverse and interesting her patients are, and cares deeply about them as individuals.
Dr. Vierra graduated from Virginia Tech with a mechanical engineering degree. While working as an engineer in a biomedical device firm in New York, she became interested in clinical medicine. She worked as an engineer during the day, and applied to medical school and studied for the MCATs at night. Though she enjoyed engineering, she left the field to attend Penn State Medical School, where she graduated as the valedictorian of her class.
In her first year of medical school at Penn State, Dr. Vierra met her husband, fellow medical student Mark Vierra. They married four years later, just one week after medical school graduation. The day after their wedding, the newlyweds packed up a U-Haul truck and traveled across the country to start their internships together at the University of California San Diego.
Dr. Vierra then completed her dermatology residency at UCSD, where she served as the Chief Resident. During her residency, she trained extensively at UCSD Medical Center, the VA Medical Center in La Jolla and Rady Children’s Hospital. After completing her dermatology residency in 2000, she joined Bernardo Dermatology Medical Group. This was her first job after graduating from dermatology residency, and from her first day in the office, Dr. Vierra knew this practice was a perfect fit for her.
Dr. Vierra feels fortunate to live and work in the Poway area. She has two teenage boys who attend school and play sports in Poway. Dr. Vierra coaches her younger son’s recreational basketball team. She spends most of her free time at the athletic fields cheering for her sons and their teammates – she is their biggest fan!
